Treating Christmas with Respect

Christmas is an annual Christian religious holiday commemorating the birth of Prophet Jesus, peace be upon him. There have been a number of criticisms of the holiday from Muslims and non-Muslims based on theological and cultural considerations. However, this cannot be used to disregard the holiday as merely an exercise in ancient pagan practices, for instance, or excessive consumerism. Muslims have to remember that for practicing Christians, Christmas really is about Jesus.

Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was so accommodating of Christians that according to the two earliest Islamic historians, Ibn e Saad and Ibn Hisham, the Prophet even allowed a delegation of 60 Byzantine Christians from Najran in Yemen to worship in his own mosque in Madinah. Lead by their bishop (Usquf), they had come to discuss a number of issues with him. When time of their prayer came, they asked the Prophet's permission to perform this in the mosque. He answered, "conduct your service here in the mosque. It is a place consecrated to God."

God expects us to stay away from mocking the religious beliefs of others, no matter how much we disagree with them. He says in the Quran:

"And insult not those whom they (disbelievers) worship besides God, lest they insult God wrongfully without knowledge" (6:108).

Furthermore we read in Quran 29:46:

"Do not argue with the People of the Book unless it is in the politest manner, except for those of them who do wrong. Say: We believe in what has been sent down to us and what has been sent down to you. Our God and your God is (the same) One, and we are Muslims before Him."

We also have to remember that for many nominal Christians, the celebration is not really about participating in religious traditions, Christmas is a time for families to get together. In a number of cases it is the only time of year families get together, either because family members are scattered in different parts of the country or the world, because of communication and relationship problems, or because in many societies today, the family unit is becoming weaker and weaker.

We need to strengthen our relations with all people for through this we will be able to reach out to them, conveying Allah's message and trying to make them understand Islam (in particular in societies where large numbers of misunderstandings exist about this religion). This is based on the following Quranic verse :

"God forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for God loveth those who are just" (60:8).

So this means that Muslims are allowed to share with non-Muslim their joyous occasions, wishing them happy holidays.

Verder lezen we in Koran 29:46:

World Poverty Day

World Poverty Day, formally known as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, is held annually on October 17. It is an international day to raise awareness about the need to end global poverty in all its forms everywhere.

World Poverty Day was first observed on October 17, 1987. More than 100,000 people gathered at the Trocadéro in Paris to honor the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger.

Five years later the United Nations (UN) General Assembly declared October 17 the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The UN declared that poverty is a violation of human rights and affirmed the need to deliberately work toward respecting the rights of the poor.

Poverty is more than the lack of money. Poverty is hunger and malnutrition, lack of shelter, illiteracy, lack of access to medical care, social discrimination and an inability to provide for oneself and one’s family. Poverty is infant mortality and losing a child to disease brought about by dirty drinking water. Poverty is powerlessness and lack of representation and freedom.

Quotations from religious scriptures on poverty:

Quran:

"The parable of those who spend their property in the way of Allah is as the parable of a grain growing seven ears with a hundred grains in every ear, and Allah multiplies for whom He pleases" (2:261).

"O you who believe! Give in charity of the good things you earn and of what We have brought forth for you out of the earth, and do not aim at giving in charity what is bad, while you would not take it yourselves" (2:267).

"If you give in charity openly it is well, and if you hide it and give it to the poor it is better for you. And it will do away with some of your evil deeds..." (2:271).

Bible:

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter — when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.”

Isaiah, 58:6-11

Veda:

“The man with food in store who, when the needy comes in miserable case begging for bread to eat, hardens his heart against him ... finds not one to comfort him.

Bounteous is he who gives unto the beggar who comes to him in want of food and feeble. Success attends him in the shout of battle. He makes a friend of him in future troubles.

No friend is he who to his friend and comrade who comes imploring food, will offer nothing. Let him depart - no home is that to rest in...”

Rig Veda, Mandala 10, Hymn 117, verses 2-4

Wereld Armoededag

Rig Veda, Mandala 10, Hymn 117, verzen 2-4
